What this year\u2019s report makes clear is that environmental and sustainability agendas cannot be pursued separately from economic success \u2013 they must be fully integrated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>\u201cThe index puts a premium on agility and adaptability, on human capital, and on innovation,\u201d says Thierry Geiger, Head of Analytics and Quantitative Research, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/archive\/competitiveness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Competitiveness<\/a> and Risks at the World Economic Forum. \u201cThis capacity to adapt, this agility can be hard to master, because some of it is to do with cultural aspects, for example when it comes to risk taking or when it comes to embracing new ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--snippet st__content-block--snippet-default\">\n<div class=\"snippet-content js-snippet-content\">\n<div class=\"snippet-content__body\">\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>What is economic competitiveness? Comparative analysis between countries allows leaders to gauge areas that need strengthening and build a coordinated response. It also helps identify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2019\/02\/oecd-most-productive-economies-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">best practices<\/a> around the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/reports.weforum.org\/global-competitiveness-report-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global Competitive Index<\/a> forms the basis of the report. It measures performance according to 114 indicators that influence a nation\u2019s productivity. The <a href=\"http:\/\/reports.weforum.org\/global-competitiveness-report-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">latest edition<\/a> covered 141 economies, accounting for over 98% of the world\u2019s GDP.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Countries\u2019 scores are based primarily on quantitative findings from internationally recognized agencies such as the International Monetary Fund and World Health Organization, with the addition of qualitative assessments from economic and social specialists and senior corporate executives.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>This year, there was an improvement in overall global competitiveness, driven by better adoption of information technology. At the top of the tree, Singapore is ranked among the top five for eight of the categories.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>\u201cWhat is striking is that you cannot make up for one weakness with a strength elsewhere,\u201d says Geiger. \u201cSo you cannot make up for good governance with technology. The US, which is second on the overall list, comes top for business dynamism and second for innovation capability. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>\u201cWhat really is a differentiating factor is the innovation ecosystem,\u201d Geiger says. \u201cCreating the conditions for innovation to become part of the entire economy, not just pockets of excellence. That takes a lot of effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\">\n<p>Even so, just innovating isn\u2019t enough.
